William Rodriguez, M.D. – Chief Executive Officer
Bill has been a leader in global health for more than two decades. His expertise has made him a valued advisor to the World Health Organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and several African and Asian governments. From 2003-2007 he served as Chief Medical Officer of the Clinton Foundation, responsible for strategy and market development for global health products and clinical policies and programs. Bill held the role of Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School for five years, Research Associate of Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital for six years, and was a member of the clinical staff at MGH and at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital for more than a decade. He served as the Chief Medical Resident at BWH following his residency. Bill earned his M.D. degree from Yale University School of Medicine and a Sc.B. degree in Neural Sciences from Brown University.
Fred Farber – Chief Technology Officer
Fred has been developing diagnostic products and bringing them to market for 25 years. He was a co-founder and VP of Product Development of Cytyc Corporation (now Hologic) where he oversaw the development of the first ThinPrep™ systems which fundamentally changed women’s health. For 10 years he was a Vice President at IDEXX Laboratories, where he held positions as VP of Instrument Engineering, General Manager of the Digital Imaging business, and VP of Customer Facing Software. Fred earned a B.S. degree in Mathematics from the University of Maryland.
Caren Block – Vice President, Human Resources
Caren has 25 years of experience in Human Resources, developing and managing HR programs in support of business objectives across multiple geographies for pharmaceutical, technology, consulting, and commercial real estate firms. She previously held positions with Reit Management & Research as Corporate Director of Human Resources, Core2 Business Consulting as Director of Program Management, and specialized in recruiting, employee relations, and communications with Spaulding & Slye Colliers, Sterling Office Services and Price Waterhouse. Caren holds her M.A. degree in Business and Organizational Communication from Emerson College and a B.A. degree in English/Speech/Theatre/Media from Kean University.
Robert Etheredge, Ph.D. – Vice President, Innovation
Rob brings to Daktari 30 years of medical device product development, manufacturing, and quality control experience. He previously served as Vice President of Operations at Transport Pharmaceuticals where he directed engineering and manufacturing for a combination drug-device product scaled for low-cost manufacturing at volumes of tens of millions of units per year. Previously, Rob was Principal and Partner at Arthur D. Little, Inc., where he led or participated in more than 100 medical device and life science programs for clients and as Principal Scientist at Tyco International. He holds numerous patents for medical innovations, and has managed all phases of medical device development from early-phase needs’ identification and concept development to manufacturing transition and post-marketing surveillance. Rob attended Northeastern University where he earned both his Ph.D. degree in Biomaterials and Inorganic Chemistry and M.S degree in Polymer Chemistry. His B.A. degree in Chemistry is from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Marta Fernández Suárez – Scientific Director
Marta’s professional career reflects her expertise in low-cost technologies for global development, spanning more than 10 years of fieldwork experience. Her projects have included minimally-invasive protein fluorescent reporters to enable real time observation and manipulation of biological systems at the cellular level; the design and development of low-cost and appropriate water and sanitation technologies for implementation in Latin America and East Africa; and microfluidic devices for point-of-care diagnosis of tuberculosis. Marta obtained her B.S. in Chemistry and M.S. in Chemical Engineering at the Institut Quimic de Sarria (Barcelona, Spain) and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Michael Fritschy – Executive Vice President, Operations
Mike has 25 years of progressive experience in developing products for the healthcare industry with global manufacturing services providers. Prior positions include Global Director of Program Management and Engineering for Jabil’s healthcare and life sciences division, Senior Director of Program Management and Engineering for Nypro, and Senior Project Manager for Smith & Nephew’s medical device business groups. Mike’s focus has been on the development, launch, and continuous improvement of product life-cycle management. He earned his M.S. degree in Innovation and Technology from Boston University and a B.S. degree in Plastics Engineering from University of Massachusetts, Lowell. He is also PMP certified.
Andrew Levitch – CFO
Andrew joined Daktari with more than 20 years of experience leading strategic, financial, and operations teams in life sciences and technology companies, ranging from Fortune 50 to start-ups. Previously, Andrew was a Partner at the life sciences advisory firm Center for Disease Analysis, where he built a CFO advisory practice. Prior experience includes 16 years with Merck, including roles as Senior Director, Global Scientific Strategy – Portfolio Management, Senior Director, Business & Research Integration, Business Director of Advanced Technologies and Oncology, and Associate Director of Investment Analysis and Planning within Merck’s Research division. Andrew also held the position of CFO at Advanticom Corporation. Prior to joining Merck, Andrew spent several years with three regional public accounting firms providing litigation support, management advisory, accounting, tax, and audit services to small and mid-sized companies. Andrew received his MBA degree from Lehigh University, a BS degree in Accounting from Rutgers College of Business, and served in the United States Navy.
Aaron Oppenheimer – Vice President, Product Design & Development
Aaron has more than 25 years of product development experience, having worked as an engineer and designer for life-science and consumer product manufacturers, from start-ups to global companies. Previously, he worked at Hewlett Packard’s medical products group and was responsible for the design of user interfaces for patient monitoring systems that remain the industry standard. He then spent a decade as a Product Development Consultant, designing life science products for clients including Dade-Behring, Insulet, and Respironics, as well as consumer products for Samsung, General Motors, and OXO. Aaron attended Carnegie Mellon University where he earned a B.S. degree in Computer Engineering.
N. Tony Sharma – Vice President, Quality & Regulatory
Tony’s 25 years of experience in quality and regulatory compliance have been in medical device, diagnostic, and pharmaceutical companies, where he maintained the highest standards for quality, regulatory, and operational excellence. Previous positions include Director of Quality for Palomar Medical Technologies, VP of Quality Systems at Transport Pharmaceuticals, Global Operational Excellence Manager at Covidien, and Director of Pre-Production Quality Assurance at Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics. Tony has his M.S. degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from University of South Florida and a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology at the University of Calicut. He is a Certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt and a Certified Quality Engineer.
